Where to look
Start at the left-front wheel and steering knuckle, then follow the sensor harness back toward its connector and the ABS module. The named wheel is the driver-side front corner, not simply the side that appears left while facing the vehicle.

Read the code correctly

C0040 identifies the left-front wheel-speed signal path. The sensor head, its harness or pigtail, connector terminals, magnetic tone/encoder ring, and hub bearing all sit on the diagnostic path; a code alone does not identify which part failed.

Approximate orientation only: the highlighted left-front area is the driver-side / left side of the vehicle, not simply the side that appears left to a person standing in front of it.

Inspect here, in order

  1. 1

    Left-front wheel / steering knuckle

Driver side / left · front hub area

Inspect the wheel-speed sensor head, retaining bolt, connector lock, terminal fit, and the harness where it clips to the steering knuckle.

  2. 2

    Left-front harness / pigtail route

    Suspension and steering-movement inspection path

Trace the lead for a broken or stretched wire, rub-through, road-salt corrosion, water entry, loose clips, and a dropout that changes through steering travel.

  3. 3

Tone / encoder ring and hub

Inside or adjacent to the front hub bearing

Check encoder or tone-ring cleanliness, rust, metal debris, air gap, and hub-bearing play when a clean sensor and harness still produce an erratic signal.

  4. 4

ABS module connector + scan path

Often under hood near the master cylinder / firewall

Use the vehicle-specific diagram and ABS-capable scan tool to verify module power, grounds, connector condition, and the left-front live signal before condemning the controller.

Platform caveat

Exact routing, sensor mounting, encoder design, connector access, and ABS module placement vary by make, model, year, and platform. Confirm the factory description and VIN-specific wiring diagram before probing or ordering parts.

Safe setup

Power off before unplugging accessible connectors, never crawl under an unsupported vehicle, and leave energized signal testing, wheel-off work, and ABS calibration to a properly equipped shop.
